Bob Garratt is the world’s pre-eminent expert on company boards and corporate governance. His personal boardroom experience as a Chairman, both in London and in Hong Kong, has made him a trusted advisor and mentor to Chairmen and Chief Executives internationally. Author of five previous best-selling books on Boards, Company Directorship and Corporate Governance, he is Professor Extraordinaire at the University of Stellenbosch Business School, and Chairman of its Centre for Corporate Governance in Africa. Involved for decades in various capacities with major Business Schools and Board Development efforts for major companies, he helped create the Chartered Director national award programme for the UK – the very first such programme in the world. His consulting experience extends to five of the world’s six continents. Among his clients have been large corporates, family businesses, family offices, state-owned enterprises, professional practices, not-for-profits, regulators, central and local governments, the International Monetary Fund, the Public Investment Corporation (South Africa), and the Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority. Bob Garratt specialises in the review and development of boards, and is regarded as a “pracademic” (practitioner as well as academic).
As a practitioner: His personal boardroom experience as a Chairman, both in London and in Hong Kong, has made him a trusted advisor/mentor to Chairmen and Chief Executives internationally. A member of the City Values Forum restoring integrity to the City of London firms, he worked with GEC-Marconi on their seminal action learning-based senior executive and board development programmes. For ten years he co-directed the Lloyds TSB Bank director development programmes. In 2011-2012 he was Advisor to KPMG LLP on Board Effectiveness and Corporate Governance rethinking the future of boards and owners. At the Institute of Directors, London, he led the Organising For Tomorrow and Developing Strategic Thought programmes, helping to create the Chartered Director national award programme of which he was an External examiner. In 2019 he was appointed the first External Examiner of the Gulf Co-operation Council’s Board Development Institute, which includes oversight of all their Board Certificate, Diploma, and Chartered Director exams, as well as their Company Secretary awards.
As an academic: He helped form the China-EEC Management Programme in Beijing in 1983 (the first Chinese MBA programme), and the ASEAN-EU Management Centre in Brunei Darussalam in 1992. He has lectured at Government level on corporate governance and board performance issues in India, South Africa, and Australia. He is an Honorary Visiting Professor at the Business School, City University, London, where his work spans the Centres for Corporate Governance, The ETHOS Research Centre, Health Management, and Entrepreneurship development. He is Professor Extraordinaire at the University of Stellenbosch Business School, South Africa, and Chairman of its Centre for Corporate Governance in Africa. He was a Visiting Professor at The Tanaka Management School, Imperial College, London, responsible for the board development of companies “spun out” by the faculty; and Senior Associate of The Judge Institute of Management, University of Cambridge. He chaired the Association for Management Education and Development, and led management education in both Ulster College, Belfast, and The Architectural Association School, London.
He has recently been appointed Visiting Faculty of the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability and Leadership, UK; Honorary Visiting Professor at Bayes Business School, City University of London, UK; and Visting Professor in Corporate Governance at the new post-graduate Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia, Jakarta.
An outstanding and popular speaker, he is the Global Ambassador for the Caribbean Corporate Governance Institute (CCGI) and was the lead speaker for the Annual Conference of the CCGI’s a2-day annual conference in 2023, on the theme of “Governing in a Polycrisis – Building Sustainable Organizations”:
